More than half of Liverpudlians surveyed in the last 12 months reported struggling to get enough sleep, according to the Liverpool Wellbeing Service. With mounting research showing a link between poor sleep and physical or mental health conditions, local wellness professionals say the answer may be as close as your own bedroom door.
July marks peak season for sleep issues across Merseyside, with longer daylight hours and warmer nights disrupting routines. According to Dr. Kemi Upton of the Baltic Triangle’s Sleep Lab, poor sleep fuels issues ranging from low workplace productivity to increased rates of anxiety at local practices like The Life Rooms in Walton. “We’re seeing a real uptick this year—Liverpool’s famously busy social lifestyle doesn’t help either,” Upton says. For city residents trying to wind down after World Cup late night screenings or community festivals, the challenge is real.
Sleep specialists from the University of Liverpool’s Active Sleep Study recommend a room temperature between 16°C and 18°C—even in a Lark Lane flat with persistent radiator quirks. “Blackout blinds from local stores on Bold Street can reduce Liverpool’s early sunrise light intrusion by up to 90%,” says resident sleep coach Amelia Connors, whose city centre workshops often fill to capacity. Noise-masking is another must for residents in Smithdown’s lively houseshare corridors or flats overlooking The Philharmonic. Simple options include sound machines available at locally-owned Windmill Wholefoods or affordable earplugs from the central Lime Street Boots (currently £5 for a 14-pack).
Bedding matters, too. “Non-synthetic sheets and hypoallergenic duvets, available at John Lewis Liverpool ONE, make a measurable difference for hay fever sufferers in Mossley Hill,” Connors adds. The right pillow—memory foam or otherwise—could run from £13 at Home Bargains up to £35 at mattress specialists Warren James. “People spend hundreds on new phones but not enough on what their head rests on,” she says, dryly.
A 2025 report from Liverpool City Council found that 42% of adults in the city regularly get less than seven hours’ sleep, with residents living closest to main roads like Queens Drive or West Derby Road among the worst affected by environmental noise. The NHS Sleep Well Liverpool programme has documented that participants who implemented just three sleep environment changes—cooler temperature, blackout blinds, and phone-free zones—reported falling asleep on average 18 minutes faster within a fortnight.
If you’re thinking of making improvements, start local and start small. Most recommendations—like eye masks (from £2) or swapping heavy curtains for blackout blinds (£20-£50)—are relatively modest investments with big potential returns. The Kensington Fields Community Centre is running free drop-in workshops every Wednesday throughout July for Liverpool residents, with practical demonstrations and support from local wellbeing advisors. As sleep science advances, experts agree: your best rest starts with your four walls. Before turning to supplements or tech fixes, making your Liverpool bedroom a true sanctuary could help you wake up ready for every moment the city has to offer.
